New York magazine is reporting on a new generation of modern bicycles that are so small and so compact that it’s hard to believe that they’re even possible to buy.
And the idea of a big wheel tricycles is starting to make sense.
The concept has been around for decades, but the market for these bikes is exploding.
In fact, the U.S. sales of big wheel bicycles have nearly doubled in the past five years, according to Bike Hub.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Brian Schmitt, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and a bike enthusiast.
“But if you look at the history of big wheels, it’s been a pretty slow pace of development.”
According to the Bike Hub, big wheel bikes were developed by bicycle companies in the late 1800s, but they quickly caught on with the public.
In 1900, the first major brand to market a big-wheel bike was the Breda company, which was founded in Hamburg, Germany.
The Bredas first big-wheeled bike was called the Bleda.
By 1910, they were competing with Schwinns big wheel, but eventually made their way into the mainstream in the 1920s and ’30s.
In the late ’60s, big- wheel manufacturers were still struggling to develop a product that would appeal to consumers who were buying their bikes from bicycle shops and bike-rental companies, Schmitt said.
“So the idea that big wheel was just a toy that people had a lot of fun riding, it kind of stuck in people’s heads,” he said.
Schmitt and his wife, Nancy, decided to look into buying a big and compact bicycle and started searching for a bicycle to test.
The pair looked at bikes like the Brieda, which were relatively inexpensive.
But they found that the bikes would be difficult to ride.
The Schmitts decided to get their hands on a Bredan bike, which they bought for $30 from a bike shop in the Boston area.
“We thought that we could use the bike to do some research, to learn more about the industry and see if we could find any real bikes that would be a good fit for us,” Schmitt explained.
In 1956, they got the Bereda back and they quickly set about trying to make their own version of the Bdeda.
The next year, they brought the Bneda back to Boston, which had already started a bicycle-rentals boom, to find out how people were using big wheel bicycle models.
“It’s just this incredible, huge demand for these bicycles,” Schmidt said.
But the big wheel concept was still not widely accepted by the bicycle industry.
“There was really no awareness of the idea,” Schmit said.
The big wheel bike was still considered an exotic toy, but it was also still popular, Schmit added.
And for the first time, people began to realize that a big bike could be an affordable and practical option for families with small children.
“The idea that this small bike could really be used to take the kids on a bicycle ride is kind of shocking,” Schafer said.
In 1958, the Bieda debuted as a full-sized, two-person bicycle.
In 1959, the company released a bigger-than-life big wheel called the Kama, which would have a seat for adults and a rear wheel for children.
But Biedan, the bicycle company that made the Bgeda, had a problem.
They could only make about 25,000 of these bicycles a year, and most of them were made in Italy.
The only way to make the Kamas big wheel in the U.”s factories was to manufacture them in China.
And while it was difficult to find the parts and labor needed to make these bikes, there were companies that were willing to manufacture the Bedans. “
They’re basically a really expensive, labor-intensive, high-performance machine,” Schuhmann said.

The Schwinn Bicycle Company, based in Wisconsin, was one of those companies.
They started making their own big wheel models in 1959.
But their bikes were only sold in Europe, where they were subject to stricter safety standards and were also more expensive.
Schwinn and Biedanz began looking for a way to market their bikes in the United States.
And in 1961, Schwinn started selling Bredans in the US.
Today, Bredzis are used to selling their bikes through bicycle shops in New York City, and they have also become a popular way to get kids and parents to take a trip.
“This is a product which is very affordable,” Schuppert said.
